Hitma Single Use

Hitma return and recycling service for single-use plastics waste

The pharmaceutical industry need to adapt to ensure it is able to comply with prospective legislation in areas such as CO2 emissions and the circular economy.

Hitma helps customers in this by collecting unused expired single-use material for sustainable reuse.

How does the Hitma return and recycling service work?
With our return and recycling service, we offer pharmaceutical companies an alternative to incinerating waste streams of unused single-use plastics that have exceeded their expiry date. This will help you to meet sustainability requirements. We seek to create a transparent process that is better for our planet.

This means always being clear about where exactly returned materials go and providing the necessary documentation to confirm this. To ensure the process remains cost-effective, we ask for a monthly contribution of 500 euros. This is a fixed fee, irrespective of the amount of expired single-use material you have and the number of times per month that it needs to be collected.

Our goal
Hitma wants to decrease the footprint of the products that we deliver and help customers in making their pharmaceutical processes more sustainable.

What's in it for you?

  • A more sustainable process by reducing the waste stream of single-use plastics
  • A network of innovative partners in the field of sustainability
  • A reduction in waste disposal costs Enhancement of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
  • The ‘Hitma Bewust’ quality label and a link to ISO and other certifications

At the start of this project it was conciously chosen to use expired single-use plastics, since these materials are more easily reusable and do not fall under the complicated laws around recycling used single-use materials.

Eventually we want to expand from only recycling expired materials to also recycling used single-use plastics. This ambition can only be fulfilled with help from and in cooperation with (large) pharmaceutical companies.

Therefore, we are building a (research) network of chain partners and we would like to get in contact with interested organisations.

Collaboration with the Biotech Training Facility
One of the customers of expired single-use components is the Biotech Training Facility in Leiden. This training institute is able to use the materials in the original form for training purposes. This collaboration results in giving the material a useful function within the pharmaceutical industry.

We can supply the following materials to the Biotech Training Facility:

  • Silicone/TPE tubing
  • Filters
  • Vials & stoppers
  • Buffer bags
  • CPC connectors C

In addition to these expired single-use plastics, we also collect other unused plastic components, even if they have not been supplied by Hitma. Once the Biotech Training Facility is equipped with sufficient materials, the remainder will be sent to be recycled and reused as a raw material for new non-pharmaceutical applications, such as safety shoes.

How can you register your expired material with us? The process looks like this: Hitma works according to a ‘you click, we collect’ principle.
