Hitma Single Use

Hitma return and recycling service for unused single-use materials

The pharmaceutical industry is an innovative and flexible sector. That has been proven by the fast change of many companies during the pandemic.

They also need to adapt to ensure it is able to meet (future) legal requirements regarding for instance CO2 emissions and sustainability. These companies work a lot with single-use products that they often order well in advance because of their planning. Due to various factors, they sometimes do not get around to using these products, which means that they expire and can no longer be used due to strict regulations. Hitma has started an initiative to help customers with this social challenge by collecting unused (almost) expired single-use material for sustainable reuse.

What's in it for you?

  • More sustainable process by reducing the waste stream of single-use plastics
  • A reduction of waste disposal costs
  • A reduction of CO2 footprint
  • Enhancement of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

How does the return and recycling service work?

With our service, we offer pharmaceutical companies an alternative to incinerating unused single-use components that have expired. If you are interested, we will contact you to discuss which components and/or assemblies you regularly have left over and how often they should be collected. Based on this, we determine how much we charge for this.

If we have signed an agreement, we will provide you with a secured container to put the materials in. We will then collect this at the agreed times by means of a green courier, who will at the same time replace the full one with a new, empty container.

Which products do we collect?

At the start of this project we deliberately chose to only collect unused single-use components that are expired, because they are easy to recycle and are not restricted by complicated laws as is the case for used products. Unfortunately, we cannot (yet) collect all sorts of unused single-use products when they are expired. We have therefore made a selection of products that can be put in the container. These are:

  • Silicone/TPE tubing - minimum 5 meters (so no short pieces)
  • Filters
  • Clamps
  • Connectors
  • Bags and bottles (no glass)

Our recycling partners

We have found various partners for the unused components that we collect. The first is the Biotech Training Facility (BTF) in Leiden. Here, training is given in a real pharmaceutical setting. In various cleanrooms, different pharmaceutical processes are simulated to train new employees, for example. The components are given a second life here and are used exactly for what they are intended.

As a second option, we have found a number of biotechnological and biopharmaceutical start-ups that can also make good use of these materials. Since these are products that have already been sold and would otherwise be thrown away, we can supply them for a minimal fee. This allows them to continue their important research and development processes and we help them on their way to hopefully more growth.

The last group of clients are companies that can recycle the materials from which the components are made. They use the raw materials for new applications, such as safety shoes. But also companies that 3D print, for example, can make good use of the raw materials of our components.
